The Boundaries of Sensory Endurance
In "The Boundaries of Sensory Endurance" you will experience a sensory overstimulation through images and sound. I challenge the visitor to experience how much stimuli they can withstand.
How does one regain control of their sensory experience and what are the boundaries of our sensory endurance? In this installation I make the visitor aware of the fases of overstimulation and how we can define our own boundaries in order to avoid become overstimulated.

In the current society it is becoming increasingly more difficult to filter stimuli. There is an ‘information overload,’ a busier society. Through an increase of technological devices, we experience more stimuli. These extra stimuli causes our brain to be over-stimulated quicker. This has an effect on how we perceive visually and auditory.
In my installation I want to show the three phases of over-stimulation. The most important senses that play a part in this are seeing and hearing. That is why I chose image and sound. To convey this feeling as well as possible, I have chosen a dome, because then the installation will feel just like the ‘real’ world. The image and the sound is with an 8.1 system.
I chose an abstract style for image and sound. Abstraction equals ‘distancing from reality,’ It is important to me to evoke a feeling during this experience. I don’t want to stimulate anything other than feelings.

The work builds up through three phases:
Phase one: the stimuli are being filtered by the brain. The person is able to differentiate between foreground and background stimuli and knows which image/sound is central. Everything feels natural and nice. Sense of space and time is right.
Phase two: slight agitation
Phase three: feelings of disorientation and over-stimulation

What I want to achieve with my installation is to test how far people are able to be stimulated by image and sound. The visitor can bring along these feelings that are evoked through the installation in their daily lives. When you experience the same feelings as you did during the installation in your daily life, you are able to recognize your limits and choose to distance yourself from all the stimuli you are experiencing.
